In this talk we will describe an old (1941) idea of C.Chabauty, which was made practical by R. Coleman in 1985, which allows to explicitly bound the set of rational points on a curve X whose genus is larger than the Mordell--Weil rank of its jacobian. We will emphasize an extension of this method discovered independently by N.Bruin and E.V.Flynn -- J.L.Wetherell, that applies in some cases where this hypothesis is not satisfied, and that is indeed sometimes easier to carry out in practice. Time permitting, we will illustrate these methods with examples.
